Colin Kaepernick is a 34-year-old civil rights activist and former professional football quarterback who played for the San Francisco 49ers until early 2017.
Kaepernick is known for taking knees whenever the national anthem was being played, as a protest against racism and discrimination against Black Americans.
He started his professional career in the National Football League (NFL) in 2011, and San Francisco 49ers is the first and last team he played for.
The activist has some heart-breaking moments in his life since birth. We will look at just three of that.
1). Kaepernick was born to Heidi Russo who was just a teenager at the time. Before, he was born, Kaepernick’s father, who is of Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Nigerian ancestry, had left Russo, leaving her with nothing. So, after Colin’s birth, her teenager mother actually struggled to care for him as no one was there to support.
2). As Russo could not take care of her baby, she put Colin up for adoption when he was only five weeks old. After few days, Colin was placed to a white couple named Rick and Teresa Kaepernick. Colin Kaepernick lived with them for decades.
3). At age 28, Colin became a free agent and has since not had a contract with any NFL team. Colin fell into this ‘unfortunate’ path when he consistently took kneels anytime the US national anthem was played. He did so as a protest against the injustice, racial and discrimination Black Americans continue to suffer.
Following his actions, the then president, Donald Trump, demanded that all NFL teams should “fire” players who took knees when the national anthem was being played.
Since then, he had not been contacted by any team to play for them. Colin, who should have been in the prime of his career by now, is now free agent since 2017.
