Nowruz festival is a new year festival celebrated by the people of Iran, Afghanistan, and in other places

Nowruz is an important cultural festival on the Iranian calendar. The festival marks the beginning of a new year in the Middle East country of Iran and Afghanistan in Asia. It is celebrated around 20th or 21st March of every year.

Nowruz is a Persian word which means ‘new day’ (Now meaning ‘new’ and ruz meaning day).

The Iranian religion Zoroastrianism gave rise to the Day of Nowruz. It is rooted in Iranian traditions. However, it has been celebrated in many parts of the world for more than 3,000 years by diverse communities in Central Asia, Western Asia, Central Asia and South Asia.

Some countries where the festival is declared a public holiday are; Afghanistan, Albania, Azerbaijan ( celebrated for five days), Georgia, Iran (celebrated for thirteen days), Iraqi Kurdistan, Pakistan, and Kazakhstan (celebrated for four days).

Others include; Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Bayan-Ölgii, Mongolia, Tajikistan (four days), Turkmenistan (two days), and Uzbekistan.

During the celebration of Nowruz, celebrants engage in house cleaning exercise and go for shopping. Others also pay visit friends and families to share good times together.

Also, Nowruz festival sees families preparing their favorite or special meals which they often share among themselves and guests.
