The Member of Parliament for Fomena Constituency in the Ashanti Region and 2nd Deputy Speaker of the 8th parliament of the 4th republic, Hon. Lawyer Andrew Asiamah Amoako has been advised by a former NPP MP to officially cross carpet to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to Nana Akomea who is the Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), for NPP to have a clear majority in parliament, the Fomena MP who is currently in parliament as an independent member needs to officially rejoin the party for a bye-election to be held with him [Hon. Amoako] contesting on the ticket of the NPP.
Mr. Akomea is however of a firm believe that Hon. Amoako will win the bye-election on the ticket of the NPP so he comes back to Parliament as an NPP Member to push the number of NPP parliamentarians from the current 137 to 138.
With the 138, NPP will become the majority in the opposition NDC’s Alban Bagbin-led 8th parliament.
“The Fomena MP has to formally cross carpet to the NPP. This will necessitate a bye election in which he stands as the NPP candidate. He wins and comes to parliament as an NPP MP, pushing the NPP numbers to 138 and formally establish the party as the majority party in parliament,” Mr. Akomea wrote on his Facebook wall.
As at now, no party has majority in parliament due to the two main political parties having the same number of lawmakers with one independent member.
