A top communications team member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and failed presidential aspirant, Stephen Atubiga says the NDC and John Mahama lost the 2020 presidential election due to the selection of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the party’s Vice Presidential candidate.
According to the ‘loudmouthed’ Atubiga, Prof Jane’s appointment to partner Mahama as his running mate for the 2020 general elections angered the party’s grassroots who also have presidential ambitions.
He believes that should a person who has been a member of the party since its establishment be selected to partner Mahama, victory would have been delivered for the party in the last year’s presidential election whose outcome were challenged at the Supreme Court and verdict given in favor of the incumbent, President Akufo Addo.
“Obviously, these aspiring NDC presidential hopefuls want to assume leadership of the party in now future. Unfortunately, JDM picked a running mate outside the power blocks. JDM rather picked running mate who many have described as not a grassroots person,” part of his facebook post reads.
He alleged that those who were against the nomination of Prof. Jane Naana as running mate were the ones who worked tirelessly against Mahama victory in the 2020 election as they feel betrayed by Prof. Jane’s nomination.
Atubiga further suggests that the General Secretary of the party, Asiedu Nketia or the National Chairman, Elder Ofosu Ampofo should be chosen as running mate to partner whoever will emerge flagbearer of the party in the upcoming presidential primaries so that the party can, with ease, win the 2024 presidential election.
According to him, the 2016 and 2020 defeats suffered by the party will be a thing of the past if any of the two national executives of the party he mentioned is nominated as running mate.
“My humble advice to any NDC presidential candidate for 2024 election is to pick the right running mate to guarantee victory for the party. Do well to subject your choice of running with exhaustive consultations to help avoid the 2016 and 2020 debacles.
I believe come 2024, Aseidu Nketia (General Mosquito) or Ofosu Ampofo, one of them as running mate or any one of them as presidential aspirants will not be bad,” he advises.

Stephen Atubiga writes
Investigation revealed to me that former president John Dramani Mahama lost 2016 election due to internal bickering and betrayal.
In the 2020 elections, the same faceless NDC people who facilitated JDM’s defeat in 2016 came around deceptively to support him finish his last term in 2020 with the hope of getting a running mate coming from any of their blocks.
Our founder, the late President J.J Rawlings unambiguously told us that the choice of JDM’s running mate (Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang) wasn’t his choice, but, she came through the right channel.
Remember, most of those who contested JDM for the presidential ticket are either grassroots persons or have been in the party longer than he JDM.
Obviously, these aspiring NDC presidential hopefuls want to assume leadership of the party in now future. Unfortunately, JDM picked a running mate outside the power blocks. JDM rather picked running mate who many have described as not a grassroots person.
This decision was greeted with mix reactions from party faithfuls and the opposition parties.
It was indeed a big disappointment to some power blocks in the party for the choice of Naana as the first female running mate.
The loyal, dedicated and hardworking grassroot persons of the party especially those with presidential ambition felt betrayed by the decision of JDM. Most of them were very passive in their posturing.
This critical decision of picking Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang activated another internal hatred for JDM going into 2020 election.
So clearly we all saw how internally some NDC faithfuls contributed to the defeat of JDM for the 2020 Presidential election due to ill-will and vengeance.
I want to be placed on record today to have said that NO NDC Presidential candidate can win any election in this country, if the internal power blocks are fully not in support of [sic] the person.
The grassroots and party members have delivered six million+ votes to JDM, yet, power blocks betrayed JDM at the collation centers and religiously facilitated his painful defeat.
Fast forward, I believe there is NO presidential candidate of NDC who can convincingly win 2024, 2028, 2032 and beyond without a grassroot person or cadre as a running mate. That’s my opinion.
My humble advice to any NDC presidential candidate for 2024 election is to pick the right running mate to guarantee victory for the party. Do well to subject your choice of running with exhaustive consultations to help avoid the 2016 and 2020 debacles.
I believe come 2024, Aseidu Nketia (General Mosquito) or Ofosu Ampofo, one of them as running mate or any one of them as presidential aspirants will not be bad.
As a matter of urgency and strategy I will like to suggest to NDC ahead of 2024 to have General mosquito as their national chairman.
He can be a useful national chairman for 2024. He can activate all the needed energy and vitality an opposition party like NDC needs before, during and after election. That’s if only our able national chairman is not contesting again.
However, a counter school of thought is vehemently advocating for General Mosquito to be maintained as the General Secretary of the party due to his track records and all.
Our national organizer for 2024 must be a hardcore person, a strategist, strong hearted and uncompromising.
Our National Youth Organizer for 2024, must be a great organizer, inspirer, selfless ,fighter and a motivator to be able to mobilize and galvanize the youth front to deliver victory for the party.
I hope I don’t sound ethnocentric. I want to suggest to the party to make sure as a matter of strategy to encourage more Ewes for national executive positions to help address a critical matter that is destroying the fiber of our party since we last had national elections.
The national women’s wing have done Very well. The current leadership must be encouraged to keep the momentum and passion alive.
It must be made clear to all national executive members that no national executive member will be allowed to contest as an MP or an MP contesting for national office.
The vice-chairmen positions should be there for strong and energetic gentlemen and women who can inspire hope and lead our party faithfuls into 2024 election battle.
It’s must be made clear to the leadership of NDC to respectfully erase going to court for justice as part of their strategic plan for 2024 election.
Election disputes must be resolved at the poling stations and not at the law court.
We need to work on our political marketing and political communication. There are lots of lessons we should learn from the past. Our political communicators must be properly nurtured and groomed to help our course.
The individualistic way of churning out information and strategy of the party is just not unprofessional but unpardonable.
As a party, we have another chance to reorganize our party and very soon select the rightful people to steer the affairs of our dear party as we countdown to yet again another crucial election in 2024.
Long live the NDC
Eye Zuu!! Eye Zaa!!
I have special love for the NDC.
