Director of Legal at the National Communications Authority (NCA), Dr. Poku Adusei, has refuted claims that Ghana’s SIM registration data is entrusted into the care of a Kenyan Information Technology company, Pitstop Technologies.

The claim was made by Selorm Abrantie, one of the Vice Presidents of IMANI Africa, in a facebook post on Thursday, January 6, 2022.

“The President of Ghana, HE Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has entrusted his biometric data into the hands of a Kenyan company whose only track record in biometric data systems is registering Soy Farmers in a county in Kenya,” Selorm Abrantie wrote on Facebook.

He added that: “From the President down to the beggar on the street with a phone, all of us, our biodata and our fingerprint data is being handled by a company without a website, with no references, no track record, no identifiable activities anywhere in the world but a tiny county the size of Ga East District to handle biometrics.

The Ministry of Communications and Digitalization has handed the whole nation’s activities to this organization or entity, as far as the digital trail goes.”

However, for the NCA Director of Legal, Dr. Poku Adusei, Selorm Abrantie’s claim has no iota of truth in it.

According to him, the collected SIM registration data is not entrusted into the hands of any company, either private or public. He added that even the telecommunication companies are not entrusted with the central collected data.

“…the SIM registration data is not stored by any private entity. Telcos don’t store the Central data collected. The App developer doesn’t store the data either,” Dr. Adusei indicated in a facebook post.

He however revealed that it is the state-owned National Information Technology Agency (NITA) that hosts and stores the collected data at the National Data Center, and not the Kenyan company as claimed by Selorm Abrantie.

“The centralised database is rather hosted by the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) at the National Data Centre. NITA is a govt agency duly designated in accordance with law to be the custodian of the Central SIM Register,” he revealed.
