The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Accra Digital Center, Mr. Kofi Ofosu Nkansah has given ‘tangible’ reasons as to why the price of cement keeps increasing drastically in the country.
In recent times, the price of various brands of cement in the Ghanaian market keep increasing to the awe of Ghanaians, especially, those who work in the construction industry.
Many believe the increasing prizes is as a result of the ‘mismanagement’ of the economy, but for Mr. Ofosu Nkansah, the cause of the problem is something different.
According to Mr. Ofosu, the frequent increase in shipping cost as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic is the key contributing factor to the high cement price in the country.
He claimed, without citing any reliable sources, that the shipping fee for transporting materials that are used in the production of cement has tripled. He believes this is the reason why local producers of the building material deemed it right to increase the price of their product in order to counter the effect of the high cost of shipping of the cement production materials.
Replying to a facebook post; the young and vibrant government appointee, Kofi Ofosu Nkansah wrote;
“Increase in cost of building materials:
The increases are due to increases in shipping costs as a result of Covid-19.
Shipping costs from China and other ports have tripled . There is shortage of containers and as a result less Shipping capacity, thereby increasing the costs.”
