Opposition Member of Parliament for Builsa South constituency, Hon. Dr. Clement Apaak has shot down claims that 90 percent of senior high schools in the country are benefiting from the free Wi-Fi policy of the government.

Hon. Ursula Owusu, former Communication Minister and Minister designate for Communication and Digitalization revealed during her vetting yesterday, February 15, 2021 that 90 percent of the 721 SHSs in the country have access to free Wi-Fi. This means out of a total of 721 schools, 649 have free Wi-Fi.

But for Dr. Apaak, the minister designate’s claim is not the truth.

He noted that Hon. Ursula has no knowledge with regards to the exact number schools that are so far benefiting from the policy.

The lawmaker also indicated that it was Vice President Dr. Bawumia who first made the claim which is not true; on live radio last year. He however wonders why the former Communication Minister will be repeating same claim before Parliament’s appointment committee.

“This is not true. I remember challenging Veep Bawumia when he made this wild claim last year to furnish us with the list 80% of SHSs, which is 577 of 721 Senior High Schools that he claimed were connected to WiFi on Asempa FM in September 30th, 2020, he went stone cold!,” he stated in a facebook post sighted by GhanaVanguard.com.

“On record, we have 721 SHSs in Ghana, it’s not true that 649, being 90% of 721 SHSs have free Wi-Fi as Ursula told the vetting committee. When Ursula was pressed further she said she was told, and that the implementing Ministry was Education and the agency, GES. If she has no first hand knowledge of this, why did she repeat a falsehood started by Bawumia?,” he added.
