On Sunday, December 12, 2021, the Asantehene Osei Tutu II celebrated the last Akwasidae of the year 2021.
The colourful event was attended by thousands of people, including government appointees, and senior security capos such as COP Kofi Boakye.
Vice President of the Republic, H.E. Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia was also in attendance, and the manner in which he greeted the Asante overlord sparked conversations on social media.
The Vice President, who was clad in Kente cloth, soon after his arrival at the Manhyia Palace, went to greet the King with his cloth not lowered. This, many Asantes believe is disrespectful to the Asantehene, as it goes contrary to what tradition demands. (ie lowering your cloth before greeting the Asantehene).
However, an investigation conducted by Ghana Vanguard reveals that Ghana’s president and his vice do not lower their cloths when with or greeting the Asante overlord.
The reason being that by so doing they [the president and the vice president] would be projecting themselves as subject to Manhyia, which should not be the case, due to their standings in the country as 1st and 2nd gentlemen of the land.
